This 1954 Gullwing is an early example (#80) with fitted luggage and tool kit. We purchased the car from a collector in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was in excellent condition, no accidents. The frame-off restoration went smoothly and all details are proper and correct to factory specifications. The colour combination is Black with Dark Green Leather Interior. Road testing will continue and is expected to finish by March 2010. Our initial trial results are excellent.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198) History

In terms of style, aesthetic, elegance, quality, and performance the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, tipo W198, is arguably the greatest race-based production car of the 20th century. The "Gullwing" earned its nickname from the unusual doors Mercedes-Benz used on both the racing and production versions of this car. Based on the racing models the 300SL has a tubular-steel frame that weighs just 120lbs. The frame was modified for the Roadster to accommodate the conventional doors. Driving this car is a nostalgic experience, until of course you let her go and experience the raw, beautiful power Mercedes-Benz engineered for the race track.

Our restorations have achieved the highest acclaim and earned the highest prices on the market, both at auction and in private sales.

  • Combined production totalled 3,258
    • 1,400 coupes from 1954-1957
    • 1,858 roadsters - including two alloy competition models from 1957-1964
